What to do in Kyoto

What to see and do in Kyoto? Kyoto’s major points of interest can be grouped into areas of the city, almost all of which are on the outskirts.

Don’t miss the Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), Kiyomizudera, Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari, Ryoanji, Nijo Castle, Nishiki Market, Gion and Pontocho.

To best visit Kyoto, I recommend using buses or renting a bicycle. The underground can be convenient for getting to your hotel/ryokan, but is rarely used to reach places of interest.

The best places to stay are the station area, Gion, Pontocho and along Shijo Dori between Omiya and Kawaramachi stations.
