Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ
How much does a 2-week trip to Japan cost?
Prices can range from 1200 euros (low budget) up to 3200 euros or more (high budget). With a mid-range budget, expect 2000–2200 euros.
How much does the plane ticket cost?
From 400 to over 1000 euros. It depends a lot on the season (high or low) and how far in advance the ticket is booked. We recommend regularly checking sites like Skyscanner or Google Flights.
Which airlines fly to Japan?
Almost all major European flag carriers (Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, British Airways, etc.) plus airlines from Arab countries (Emirates, Qatar, etc.).
Do I need a visa to enter Japan?
No visa application is required. Italian citizens receive a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival in Japan. You just need a valid passport at the time of exit.
What should I do if I get sick or injured?
Healthcare in Japan is private, like in the U.S., so it is advisable to take out travel health insurance before departure.
Where can I exchange Euros for Yen?
We recommend exchanging money at banks or post offices in Italy (if the rate is good) or directly at the airport in Japan. ABSOLUTELY avoid currency exchange booths in Italian and European airports.
Can I use an ATM or credit card for payments?
You can withdraw money with a debit card and pay or withdraw with credit cards (including prepaid ones). However, some ATMs and prepaid cards may not work. It’s best to carry some cash (exchange it in Italy or Japan).
Are transportation costs high?
Public transportation in Japan is quite expensive (but high quality). That’s why tourists can buy special passes like the Japan Rail Pass, regional passes, or subway/bus passes.
What is the Japan Rail Pass?
The Japan Rail Pass is a ticket that allows unlimited travel on all Japan Railways (JR) trains. Only a few trains are excluded (Nozomi, Mizuho). It is valid for 7, 14, or 21 consecutive days.
Is the Japan Rail Pass always worth it?
After the significant price increase in October 2023 (+69%), the Japan Rail Pass is often not cost-effective. Consider single tickets or regional passes instead.
What is the climate like in Japan?
The climate is similar to that of Italy (except in Hokkaido and Okinawa). Summers are hot and humid; spring and autumn are the best seasons. Winter can be cold and snowy.
Will my electronic devices work?
Japan uses a different voltage than Italy (100V instead of 220V). Chargers for phones, tablets, and laptops will work – you just need a plug adapter. Hairdryers and straighteners may not work unless they are dual-voltage travel models.
How many days do you need to visit Japan?
Ideally, 2 weeks. Split between Tokyo and Kyoto. The minimum recommended stay is 10 days. Less than that is not worthwhile due to the long flight (at least 12 hours).
Which cities to visit and how many days for each?
The two main cities are Tokyo (at least 4 days) and Kyoto (3 days).
From Tokyo, you can do day trips to Nikko, Kamakura, Hakone, and Kawaguchiko.
From Kyoto, you can visit Nara, Osaka, Himeji, Hiroshima, and Miyajima.
I want to call Italy or use the internet. How?
Using your own SIM for calls or data is not recommended (very expensive). You’ll find free Wi‑Fi in many places, but for reliable internet, rent a Pocket Wi‑Fi or buy a data SIM.
What is a Pocket Wi‑Fi and where can I get one?
A Pocket Wi‑Fi is a device with a data SIM that works like a home router. Turn on Wi‑Fi on your device and connect to it. Up to 10 devices can connect. It offers unlimited internet and works everywhere.
You can rent it online at Japan-Wireless.com. With Japanforeveryone.com, you get a 25% discount.
